TUTORING PROGRAM

All students can benefit from the extra help and attention a tutor can provide, but shrinking budgets and limited resources keep this advantage from students who need it most. This is why we created a volunteer Internet-based tutoring program that pairs tutors and students remotely.

As an extension of our TeacherMate program, tutors are connected to students over the telephone while sharing a mutual “whiteboard” on the classroom computer. The tutor and student read stories together, work on word activities and play word games, all integrated with the classroom instruction. Tutors are confident that what they are working on with the student is an extension of what the teacher is presenting in the classroom.

Remote tutoring offers participants the flexibility to work with students at mutually beneficial times throughout the day. There is no travel involved, so more time is spent working one-on-one helping students build skills necessary for a lifetime of learning.

Tutoring programs can have a positive effect on the academic success of a student and tutors consistently tell us that our tutoring program is the most satisfying way to spend a half hour during their week. Companies that have participated in our Internet Tutoring Program include Boeing, Chicago Tribune, Discover Card, JPMorgan Chase, the Jewish United Fund, Northern Trust, RR Donnelley, SalesForce.com and Zenith Insurance.
