OVERVIEW

Innovations for Learning, Inc. (IFL) is an Illinois nonprofit formed in 1993 to develop innovative technology to improve early elementary education. IFL has created a complete supplemental beginning reading and math instructional program for K-2 classrooms, which has been demonstrated to be effective by independent university research.

In 2008 IFL launched the TeacherMate Differentiated Instruction System to enable K-2 teachers to more easily differentiate instruction for all students using handheld computers. The TeacherMate Differentiated Instruction System was first delivered on IFL's TeacherMate Computer, a low-cost special-purpose handheld computing device. Starting in 2011 the TeacherMate System will be offered on iPads and iPod Touches. Nearly 50,000 students across the country are using the TeacherMate Differentiated Instruction System for beginning reading and math instruction.

All Teach for America first grade teachers in Chicago and Phoenix are using the TeacherMate System to differentiate instruction, as well as all first grade teachers in Academy of Urban School Leadership (AUSL) schools.

IFL is also piloting the TeacherMate Differentiated Instruction System in developing countries. In cooperation with the Open Learning Exchange, the TeacherMate System is currently in the first year of a pilot for elementary students in Kigali, Rwanda. Stanford University has launched demonstration pilots of the TeacherMate System in Mexico, Singapore, Korea and the Philipines.

IFL has developed a unique online tutoring program in which volunteers from corporations tutor students over the Internet. JPMorgan Chase has started a national rollout of IFL's online tutoring program this year. Other participating corporations include Bank of America, Northern Trust, Chicago Tribune and the Jewish United Fund.
