It all starts with Literacy.

Happy National Volunteer Week!

As National Volunteer Week comes to a close, we at Innovations for Learning wanted to thank all of our tutors who devote 30 minutes each week to make a real difference in the life of a child learning to read.

Yesterday, we had a chance to celebrate National Volunteer Week at “Blue palooza,” a community partner fair put on by our friends at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. Together, we celebrated individuals who are making a difference by volunteering through TutorMate and other programs.  In 2014, Blue Cross Blue Shield employees volunteered more than 39,000 hours, and judging by the enthusiasm and interest we saw at Blue palooza, that number will be growing in the years to come!

Several current tutors stopped by to say hello and tell us about the gains in reading skills and confidence that their students have made since they started tutoring at the beginning of the school year. We also met lots of people who had made the decision to begin volunteering and will be giving back to their communities by joining TutorMate for the first time in the fall!

This event was a great capstone to National Volunteer Week, as we joined other nonprofits to recognize and celebrate the positive impact that volunteers can make. National Volunteer Week may be ending, but we’ll be taking the spirit of National Volunteer Week and celebrating our volunteers’ awesome contributions all year long.
