Small Companies: Big Results in Indianapolis

TutorMate thrives on the dedicated support of our tutors, who come from corporations big and small. This year in Indianapolis Public Schools, two small businesses made an impact in a big way.

One local company, Aqua Systems, adopted Mrs. Bennett’s classroom at Christian Park School, and its employees quickly embraced their role as tutors. Despite their small office staff, Aqua Systems gathered a team of ten tutors and consistently made weekly calls a team effort. President Don Line feels TutorMate “has far exceeded that of any of our other volunteer efforts: The program is proven, so you can see results as you go. It is convenient, so it’s easy for busy individuals to stay with the program. But most of all, it is an absolutely heart-warming and meaningful mentoring opportunity.” The feeling was evident among the team at the recent “End of Year” celebration where many smiles were permanent, hugs were shared, and even a few warm tears shed before departing.

The ideal time to create tutor pairings is at the beginning of the school year. Occasionally we have the chance to match new schools with tutor partners later in the year, as was the case for Oak Street Funding. Tutors from Oak Street quickly assembled an impressive team of ten and became fixtures as part of the regular routine for students in Diane Flannigan’s room at PLA George Fisher. In addition to becoming a core aspect of the class, Mrs. Flannigan noticed a tremendous impact on her students’ reading and attitudes in the few short months of tutoring. Oak Street Funding is an amazing partner who graciously donated an entire flatbed of books to the school and presented the kids with wonderful personalized bookmarks and goodies too!

The success of Aqua Systems and Oak Street Funding at Indianapolis Public Schools proves that even adopting one classroom can make a big impact in the early literacy of first graders. IFL appreciates all of the support from tutors and partners in our first year in Indianapolis, including Defenders, Eli Lilly and Company, Ingredion, JPMorgan Chase, Mary Rigg Community Center and Salesforce.
