Grand Gestures in Grand Rapids

Posted

What do a publishing company, a multi-level marketing company and a furniture manufacturer have in common? They are all providing their employees with the opportunity to tutor emerging readers in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

HarperCollins Publishers, Amway and Steelcase have partnered with Innovations for Learning and its TutorMate program to bring online literacy tutoring to first graders in Grand Rapids Public Schools for the first time. In addition to supporting the one-on-one tutoring program through volunteerism, these Grand Rapids partners are generously underwriting the program, helping to provide equipment to classrooms, training and support to teachers and tutors, and much more.

Amway and its chairman, Steve Van Andel, have exceeded expectations by producing a 30-second video that has been circulating on local television this winter. The video promotes the targeted literacy intervention for students, made possible by a new partnership between Amway, Grand Rapids Public Schools and Innovations for Learning.
